R.E.M. Breaks Up After Three Decades

R.E.M. announced today that they have broken up after 31 years together. "As lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," the band said in a statement on their official website. "We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished."

In just over three decades as a band, R.E.M. released 15 albums including landmark works such as Murmur, Reckoning, Document, Out of Time andAutomatic For the People. The band's final album, Collapse Into Now, was released in March of this year. The band have plans to release a career-spanning greatest hits collection later this year, which will include a handful of new songs finished after the band completed Collapse Into Now.

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'?," bassist Mike Mills wrote on the R.E.M. site. "Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together."

Mills insists that the band have ended their working relationship on very good terms. "We feel kind of like pioneers in this," he says. "There's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

Interview: R.E.M. Roars Back With 'Collapse Into Now'

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way," says frontman Michael Stipe.


Ethan Kaplan, owner of the R.E.M. fan community Murmurs and former Senior Vice President of Emerging Technology at Warner Bros. Records, says that the band's decision was influenced in part by label politics. "I suspected this was coming last fall," Kaplan tellsRolling Stone. "If you remember, they weathered a lot of storms in this business, and have always operated on their own terms. [Warner Bros.] changed starting last September, and I think the demands on a band now to get a record out were more than they might have wanted to commit. I can understand that after how hard they worked for how long, the thought of going back to 'paying dues' with new label staff, in a very weird industry, was too much."

In a 2007 Rolling Stone interview, Stipe summed it up nicely. "We didn't set out for this to be a career. We just knew it was something we wanted to do, and we would stop when we didn't want to do it anymore.

Έρχεται νέο άλμπουμ από τους Pearl Jam

Μιλώντας στο περιοδικό Rolling Stone ο μπασίστας των Pearl Jam, Jeff Ament αποκάλυψε πως το συγκρότημα έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει ηχογραφήσεις για νέο άλμπουμ.

Παραγωγός θα είναι ο για χρόνια φίλος και συνεργάτης του συγκροτήματος Brendan O'Brien. Σύμφωνα με την ίδια συνέντευξη θα πρέπει να περιμένουμε το άλμπουμ την άνοιξη του 2012.

"Αποφασίσαμε να δουλέψουμε το νέο άλμπουμ στο Los Angeles και όχι στο Seattle όπως συνηθίζουμε. Μια αλλαγή θα μας κάνει καλό!" είπε ο Ament.

Το νέο άλμπουμ (δεν έχει ακόμη τίτλο) θα είναι το δέκατο του συγκροτήματος και έρχεται να διαδεχθεί το "Backspacer" του 2009. Σαν παραγωγός ή μηχανικός ήχου, ο Brendan O'Brienέχει συνεργαστεί με καλλιτέχνες όπως Bob Dylan, AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen κ.α.

Ύστερα από 31 χρόνια κοινής δημιουργικής συνύπαρξης, οι R.E.M ανακοίνωσαν μέσα από το επίσημο site τους ότι δεν θα υφίστανται πλέον ως συγκρότημα.

Οι –λατρεμένοι από το ελληνικό κοινό- R.E.M σχηματίστηκαν το 1980 από τον Michael Stipe (φωνητικά), τον Mike Mills (μπάσο), τον Peter Buck (κιθάρα) και τον Bill Berry (drums) και έκτοτε, παρά την φυγή του Bill Berry το 1995 κυκλοφόρησαν θρυλικά  rock albums, πειραματιζόμενοι με ήχους που ξεκινούσαν από to alternative/college rock και έφταναν μέχρι την country/blues.

 Αγαπημένα μέχρι και σήμερα παραμένουν τα “Out Of Time”, “Automatic For The People”, “Monster” καθώς και οι κλασσικοί «ύμνοι» όπως το “The One I Love” και τα “Man On The Moon”, “Losing My Religion”, "Everybody Hurts".

Για το τέλος, σας παραθέτουμε ένα μικρό απόσπασμα από την ανακοίνωση του «αντίο» των R.E.M: «Στους fans και τους φίλους μας: Σαν R.E.M και σαν φίλοι και καλλιτέχνες  για μια ζωή, αποφασίσαμε να δώσουμε ένα τέλος στο συγκρότημα μας.  Αποχωρούμε με μεγάλη αίσθηση ευγνωμοσύνης και εκπλήρωσης του σκοπού μας, νοιώθοντας παράλληλα τεράστια έκπληξη για όσα κατορθώσαμε όλα αυτά τα χρόνια.»  Τέλος εποχής για τo σύγχρονο rock, μετά τους Oasis και οι R.E.M λένε αντίο…

Οι Manic Street Preachers ετοιμάζονται να εκδώσουν μια συλλογή που θα περιέχει και τα 38 singles που κυκλοφόρησαν από το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ "Generation Terrorist" μέχρι και το "Postcards From A Young Man" του 2010.

Μεταξύ αυτών θα υπάρχει και μια διασκευή του τραγουδιού των The The, "This Is The Day". Ο τίτλος της συλλογής είναι "National Treasures – The Complete Singles".

Το πρώτο βίντεο που ανέβηκε στο YouTube αφορά το τραγούδι "This Is The Day" και μπορείτε να το ακούσετε παρακάτω.

Οι Manic Street Preachers δημιουργήθηκαν το 1986 στο Blackwood της Ουαλίας και μέχρι σήμερα έχουν κυκλοφορήσει 10 άλμπουμ. Συχνά αποκαλούνται και "Manics". Ο αρχικός στιχουργός του συγκροτήματος Richey Edwards εξαφανίστηκε μυστηριωδώς το 1995 και από τότε δεν έχει κανείς νέα του. Δημοφιλή τραγούδια του συγκροτήματος: "Motorcycle Emptiness", "Theme From M.A.S.H. (Suicide Is Painless)", "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next", "Ocean Spray", "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" κ.α.
