Metallica and Dave Mustaine

Perform 'Hit The Lights'

DECEMBER 11, 2011

If there's ever a movie made about Metallica, last night's concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco should be the final scene. In a moment that was impossible to imagine just a few years ago, the original line-up - featuring James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney - took the stage for the final two songs of the evening. It was the first time that they'd played together since 1982.
Mustaine played on the final five songs, all of which were drawn from his brief time with the band. The Megadeth frontman had reunited with Metallica at numerous Big Four concerts over the past couple of years, but that was always during a chaotic jam on a Diamond Head song. He hadn't played a Metallica song with them since his extremely bitter departure in 1983. Check out this video of "Hit The Lights," that features the current line-up of Metallica joined by Mustaine, McGovney and Lloyd Grant, who played guitar on the original recording of the song in early 1982. A more detailed account of the show, which also featured Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Jason Newsted, Bob Rock and other guests, will go up later.

Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys going to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Fans of Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The three bands will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 14th, 2012 at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH.

Other inductees will include Donovan, singer/songwriter Laura Nyro and The Faces whose lineup once boasted artists like Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. The Cure, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Eric B. & Rakim missed the honor this year.

So now the big question will be whether GnR will reunite on stage to accept the honor or will Axl diva out and refuse to walk on stage with Slash, Izzy, Duff and Steven Adler. Or perhaps this will be the catalyst to finally get a proper Guns n’ Roses reunion? Either way, it’s good that they’ve finally been recognized for their contribution to rock music because whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, they wrote some bad ass tunes back in the day.

Of course, the Chili Peppers will show up and most likely John Frusciante will be there as well. The Beasties never broke up so maybe this will be an opportunity for them to finally perform live again. In any case, HBO will air the ceremony in May of 2012 so set your DVR from now.

The Black Keys - El camino album review

El Camino

The Black Keys

El Camino

Nonesuch
Over 10 years and seven albums, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have turned their basement blues project into one of America's mightiest bands. Weaned on Stax 45s and Wu-Tang loops, the Black Keys smeared the lines between blues, rock, R&B and soul, with Auerbach's horny Howlin Wolf yowl bouncing off garage-y slashing and nasty body-rocking grooves. Like that other guitar and drums duo from the Rust Belt, the Akron, Ohio, guys brought raw, riffed-out power back to pop's lexicon. On 2010's Brothers, they found a perfect balance between juke-joint formalism and modern bangzoom. The result was a few Grammys and so many TV ad placements, The Colbert Report did a sketch about it.
El Camino is the Keys' grandest pop gesture yet, augmenting dark-hearted fuzz blasts with sleekly sexy choruses and Seventies-glam flair. It's an attempt at staying true to the spirit of that piece-of-shit minivan on the album cover – similar to their first touring vehicle – while reimagining it as a pimpmobile.
This is the Black Keys' third meeting – following 2008's Attack & Release and one track on Brothers – with Danger Mouse, a.k.a. Brian Burton. Here, the band essentially becomes a trio, with Burton as co-producer/co-writer throughout. His brilliance, as the planet heard on Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, is blowing details of classic pop up to Jumbotron scale. Listen to the keyboard part that kicks in the door of El Camino's "Gold on the Ceiling": a serrated organ growl backed up with a SWAT team of hand claps. It's Sixties bubblegum garage pop writ large, with T. Rex swagger and a guitar freakout that perfectly mirrors the lyrics, a paranoid rant that makes you shiver while you shimmy.
The single "Lonely Boy" works the same way, launched on a gnarly, looped guitar riff whose last note slides down like a turntable that someone keeps stopping. Then a sugar-crusted keyboard comes in, along with what sounds like a boy-girl chorus, changing the swampy chug into a seductive singalong.
The Keys cited the Clash as an influence for El Camino, and that influence is evident in the increased zip of the grooves, and in the group hug between roots music and rock spectacle: See "Hell of a Season," whose choppy guitar chords and relentless beat twists into a dubby, uptight reggae pulse. Of course, you can just as easily hear Led Zeppelin in "Little Black Submarines," an acoustic blues that gets run over halfway through by electric riffs and brutish drums, Carney doing a hilariously great junkyard John Bonham.
There's still a strange jukebox anonymity to the Keys' approach; their vintage organ and guitar sounds often project larger personae than the band itself. But part of the reason Carney and Auerbach keep finding new ways to shake up that old-school blues-rock rumble is that they're workaday dudes smart enough to get out of the way of their own songs. Like Clark Kent's or Peter Parker's, their 99 percentness only seems to enhance their powers.

Lou Reed-Metallica collaboration follows years of collective mediocrity

A tiny, optimistic part of my brain keeps telling me not to give up on the new Lou Reed-Metallica collaboration. Reed fronted The Velvet Underground — he’s a living legend. Metallica members James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich were living legends up until 1996. With the amount of quality songs between these artists, I should be excited for the Nov. 1 release of Lulu, the collab’s upcoming album.
But those good songs were written years ago. Neither Lou Reed nor Metallica have been relevant in over a decade. And frankly, supergroups usually suck. Why would this be any different?
According to the album’s official site, Reed originally wrote Lulu as a theatrical production but recorded it as an album after “coming together with the ‘Tallica boys for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York in 2009.” Loutallica (their word, not mine) started recording in May, their efforts culminating in the 10-song, 87-minute rock opera Lulu.
Just think — 87 minutes of Rob Trujillo-era Metallica. I shouldn’t judge something before hearing it, but that’s too long for any band, let alone this one.
Below is a video of the aforementioned Rock and Roll Hall of Fame collaboration that sold Reed on this whole project. Hetfield and co. awkwardly stumble through “Sweet Jane” as Reed mumbles words that resemble lyrics. Not really the stuff of legends, but it’s a taste of what the album might sound like.
Lulu drops worldwide on October 31 on Universal Music and on November 1 in North America on Warner Bros. Records.

Lou Reed & Metallica - "The View" Video
When Loutallica met with director Darren Aronofsky (Black SwanThe Wrestler) in the Bay Area last month, they were supposed to shoot a video for “Iced Honey.” Instead they made a video for single “The View.” Not that it matters if you watch it on mute.

Lulu was in stores via Warner Bros., but they’ve all sold out now, sorry.

Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream (Reissue)

Smashing Pumpkins

Siamese Dream (Reissue)

Capitol/EMI

The black turtleneck to Kurt Cobain's flannel shirt, Billy Corgan brought an auteur's sensibility to Nineties alternative rock: He didn't smash guitars, he stroked them into ecstatic swells of heaviosity as he cooed composition-book poetry. With 1993's Siamese Dream – which, like the band’s debut, Gish, has been beautifully remastered and loaded with extras, including a hometown show on DVD – Corgan built a monument to art rock and OCD. His dizzy, acid-softened side lent songs like "Hummer" their poignancy – and animates the best bonus material. Are those bongos on "Blue"?

Creepy Nashville all-girl garage band The Black Belles prime for the release of their self-titled, Jack White-endorsed, debut.

The White Stripes mainman, now producer and Third Man label manager, discovered the witchy quartet and recorded their first two 7-inches.

The first, 'What Can I Do', became the theme to Elvira's Movie Macabre TV show and the second, 'Charlene 11', saw them as the backing band for master satirist Stephen Colbert.

Single number one from their self-titled debut is 'Honky Tonk Horror', featuring the ghoulish gals in their full, grave-robbing, garage glory.

Check out a preview below. The album will be out on December 2.

Mazzy Star : The Los Angeles duo's first single in 15 years is pure country-rock haze

Mazzy Star

"Common Burn"

Rolling Stone: star rating
Community: star rating

The Los Angeles duo's first single in 15 years is pure country-rock haze: nodding harmonica, shivering electric guitar and Hope Sandoval's voice – angel, lover, hallucination of your mom speaking to you in utero. It's like they never left.
